Fancy footwork leads to first home in 17-story building Many people enjoy window shopping during their lunch breaks. But Kristin Tomala took noontime browsing to a whole new level. It was while strolling in the neighborhood around her office in the West Loop that she discovered R+D659, a 17-story condo building at Randolph andDesp1aines. She decided to a buy her first home there. "The idea of living just a shortwalk from work was what originally attracted me to R+D659. ButI also knew the West Loop would be a great investment," she said. "Having worked in the area for several years, I have seen how many restaurants and stores have come to the neighborhood, which is a sure sign this location will rise in value." A total of 237 condominius are planned. Base prices range from the low-$200,000 s to the mid-$400,000s. Units have 1 to 3 bedrooms. Sizes range from 608 to 1,230 square feet. "Another reason I wanted to purchase in the West Loop was I knew I could find a home in my price range, and still get to live in a trendy area," Tomala said. "When you factor in the discounted rate and the tax benefits, the monthly mortgage payments are even lower than the rent I paid for an apartment in the Gold Coast," she said. The amenities at R+D659 were another big factor in Tornala's decision. She is eager to use the building's outdoor pool, which will be on the fourth floor along with a landscaped sun deck and Japanese garden. But she is particularly glad about the dog run. "I got a puppy last fall. I wanted to be sure I'd be able to take him outside easily," she said. "It will make it so much easier to have Cody in the city knowing there's a place right in the building to take him out." Other amenities at R+D659 include an exercise room, a business center and a lounge with a plasma TV. "The club room will be a great place to have a group of friends come over before we head out to the restaurants and clubs on Randolph," Tomala said. Having resided in rental apartments with communal laundy rooms, Tomala is looking forward to the convenience of having her own laundry facilities." When you rent, you never have an in-unit washer and dryer," she said. |
